Cincinnati Comellos Basketball

The Cincinnati Comellos was a professional basketball team in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team played in the National Basketball League, which formed in 1937. In 1949, this league joined with the Basketball Association of America to form the National Basketball Association.

The Cincinnati Comellos played less than one season (1937-1938). The team began the season as the Richmond King Clothiers in Richmond, Indiana. Hoping to increase attendance, the team's owners moved the squad to Cincinnati during the middle of the season. The team finished fifth in the the National Basketball League's Western Division. The Clothiers/Comellos won just three and lost seven games. Due to its poor
performance, the Cincinnati Comellos disbanded at the end of the season.

...grandfather and his cousin "Little Joe" played on that team. The league may even have team rosters showing that. There were basketball pictures and trophies among those the family once held when we lived at 1270 Duncan.

Your grandfather and grandmother were married in 1937 and there was the worst flood ever in Cincinnati that year during the basketball season. The entire downtown basin was under water as were the approaches to all the bridges interrupting road and rail travel between northern Kentucky and Cincinnati.

Gus Comello was the owner of the team. His other and taller son Gussie may have played on it as well as little Joe and dad.
